Chapter 14

“Are we going to get to the camp tonight?” Ruby threaded her thumbs under the shoulder straps. Sweat beaded on her forehead.

“We’re going to do our best.” Jessa hoped her smile reassured Ruby. The Camp was only seven miles across town. Jessa knew she could have made the trip in a few hours on a normal day, but with the added weight of the packs, Ruby, and the unknown they may encounter Jessa prayed they made it by nightfall.

Last night took a toll on both of them. After escaping the men at the hospital, they walked about a mile before the chaos exploded around them. The county enacted a curfew in the hours before the storm hit but now, after four days it was unenforceable. Most law enforcement officers had gone home to be with and protect their own families and those that were left were just too worn out from being on shift for so many days, it was taking its toll.

Jessa knew from the hospital staff that the National Guard was expected in from Central Texas on day two but other than the pallet of supplies at the hospital no one ever showed. Lewis, the hospital security guard mentioned that they had no communication with the outside and no idea when, or even if, anyone was coming.

As they walked last night gun shots sounded all around them, shouts and screams echoed through the dark night. Barking dogs, crashes, and shadows filled the night air. Ruby’s hand trembled in hers.

“We are going to be okay. Daddy has taught us a lot and that gives us a good advantage. I know it’s scary out here but we are strong and we can do this.” She pulled up the straps on Ruby’s backpack in an attempt to calm and reassure the young girl. “Now, what’s the first thing we need to do?”

“Have a goal.” Ruby flinched as a gun went off close by.

Jessa swallowed, working to steady her own hands, “Right. I think our first goal is not to be seen. How can we do that?”

Ruby thought for a second, “Not use the flashlights.”

“Good,” Jessa took Ruby’s hand and began to walk again.

“And try to stay in the dark areas out of the moonlight.” The young girl continued. “And don’t talk.”

“That’s a great idea.” Jessa set a steady pace, trying to take Ruby’s smaller stride into consideration.

Being that Corpus is famous for its horrible drainage they did one thing right. They built their streets with the middle higher than the sides to encourage the run off towards the drainage access. In many cases the gutters and sidewalks would be flooded leaving high ground exposed in the middle lane. The streets of Corpus have been known to flood with nothing more than a good rain, the hurricane dumped more rain on the city in one day than they had seen in the last two years combined.

What wasn’t flooded was covered with debris from trees and homes, backyard furniture littered lawns and streets.
